PRIN project

12 January 2009

“The scientific evaluation of income support programs” is a research project co-sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) and three italian universities(Università Bocconi, Università degli Studi di Torino and Università degli Studi di Bari).

Three research teams are currently working on the project:

  1. The first research unit, involving Tito Boeri, Michele Pellizzari e Paola Monti (all fRDB staff, based at Bocconi University), will focus on evaluating the experiment of the Reddito Minimo d’Inserimento carried out in Italy between 1998 and 2001. The analysis will offer a better understanding of how far results obtained in other countries, expecially concerning labour supply, apply to the Italian context. An analisys concerning the effects of the RMI experiment on crime is cirrently being undertaken.
  2. The second research unit, coordinated by Ugo Colombino (Università degli Studi di Torino) and  based in Turin, will carry out an impact evaluation of income support policies on income distribution and efficiency of the economic system as a whole.
  3. Finally, the third research unit, based in Bari and coordinated by Maria Concetta Chiuri (Università degli Studi di Bari), will focus on the analysis of some aspects of minimum income programs that receive only marginal attention in literature, although they may play a crucial role in Italy (the effect of a minimum income on household labour force decisions, on women participation in the labour market, on fertility).
